GALLERY SHOWS
June 14, 2009, 09:43:03 by president in Press Releases.

Two New Gallery Exhibits at BAC in July

From July 1 through July 30, Russel T. Dailey will exhibit Surf and Turf: Seascapes and Landscapes in Watercolor, in the Show Place Gallery at the Buchanan Art Center. Concurrently, Pastels: Color and Light, artwork by Donna Chambers will be on display in the Library Gallery. The Opening Reception for these two exhibits will be held on Sunday, July 5, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Russel T. Dailey, a Canadian, moved to the U.S. at an early age and lived in various cities. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Notre Dame. Since then, he has worked as a technical illustrator for the Bendix Missile Plant in Mishawaka, as a cartographic draftsman for Clyde Williams Associates, and a technician designer for Cole Associates. He retired from M/E Design Services in South Bend in 2005. Dailey was introduced to watercolors by Zygmund Jankowski and Ed Herrmann in the early 1960s. He states, "Many of the things that we see on a daily basis provide us with the potential for a painting but we don't always recognize them as such." He hopes his paintings will provide a "meaningful experience for the viewer."

Donna Chambers has been an art lover since childhood. She has used many art mediums, including stained glass and creative writing. Currently, she is painting in pastels using such diverse subjects as landscapes, animals and portraits. Her work has been hung in juried shows at The South Bend Civic, the Box Factory for the Arts, Studio Arts, the New Galleries. Chambers' art education includes classes at Monterey Peninsula College, The Box Factory, Studio Arts, Buchanan Art Center, South Bend Museum of Art, as well as workshops with renown artists in pastels; Richard McDaniel and Allan Flattman. She is currently a student with Harry Ahn, an internationally known and honored artist in oils. Chambers is a practicing psychologist and hypnotherapist in St. Joseph Michigan. She feels that art is the "window" to the inner life of people. She has utilized art to help children and teens "verbalize" their emotions. She says, "It (art) is a non-complex way to access the emotional life, and a creative expression of deep, inner emotions. It brings satisfaction and healing to those who utilize the creativity within themselves. Whether one is an artist or an art lover, art quietly enhances our daily lives with color, perspective and joy." She will be teaching an introduction to pastels class at Buchanan Art Center this summer.

The Buchanan Art Center is a non-profit organization located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, MI. It houses three galleries and a gift shop, and offers classes and workshops to people of all ages. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00am-6:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday1:00-4:00pm. NEW EXHIBITS IN JUNE
May 21, 2009, 11:52:11 by president in Press Releases.

"WATER" BEAUTIFIES BUCHANAN ART CENTER EXHIBITS

"Oil and Water," paintings and First Day Covers by Mary Fisher, and "Lake Michigan Splendor," photography by Kristine (Wright) Sims will be featured at a reception open to the public on Sunday, June 7, from 2:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. at the Buchanan Art Center. Both exhibits run from June 2-30, and there is no charge.

Mary Fisher loves to paint in both oil and watercolor. While her subject matter often determines which medium she will use, she is comfortable with either. For the past 20 years, she has painted First Day Covers, also called Cachets. Cachets are an envelope designed around and affixed with a new issue stamp. The United States Post Office then cancels these envelopes with the official city, state and date of that new stamp. These cachets are highly collectable by stamp enthusiasts to whom she sells throughout the United States and worldwide. Fisher is president of the Cachetmakers Association, a chapter of the American First Day Cover Society. She has consistently won top awards in the Cachetmakers' Contest sponsored annually by the AFDCS. Additionally, her covers are regularly chosen and displayed in the AFDCS publication First Days. Her May 28, 2006 cachet of the 400th anniversary of the Exploration of Samuel de Champlain was featured on the cover of nationally known reference catalog Scott's First Day Cover Catalogue & Checklist. Fisher has been a resident of the Michiana area most of her life. She graduated from Riley High School in South Bend, Indiana, and subsequently received bachelor and master degrees from Indiana University, Bloomington. She has exhibited her artwork in various juried shows including the Leeper Park Art Fair. Presently her available First Day Covers are for sale on the internet at: stampwants.com/stores/fishercachets.

Kristine (Wright) Sims brings "Lake Michigan Splendor" to the Library Gallery. She graduated from Buchanan High School where she took three years of art under Marie Remington, and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design at Grand Valley State University. She is currently employed at a local graphics printing company. Her love for Southwest Michigan and Lake Michigan drew her to attempt to capture its beauty and ever changing views. She enjoys sharing her pictures with people who are not so fortunate to experience the Lake. All of her pictures have been taken in southwestern Michigan, including Saint Joseph, Grand Haven, South Haven and Holland. "It wasn't a very hard decision to decide on a subject matter or title for this show. Lake Michigan Splendor" truly fits what I have captured and what I am sharing in my photographs. No two sunsets are ever the same, no two storms ever create the same cloud formations or color reflections onto the water, and every year the sand dunes and surrounding terrain change shape."

The Buchanan Art Center is a non-profit organization located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, MI. It houses three galleries and a gift shop, and offers classes and workshops to people of all ages. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00am-6:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday 1:00-4:00pm. Linoleum cuts are a classic printmaking method and are valued for their ease and beauty. They are easy to do and great for beginners. Wood engraving is more difficult, but one has to start somewhere! Wood engravings were used to illustrate books and papers before offset printing and photographic processes. Their beauty lies in their black background and white lines. Wood engraving differs from wood cuts because it is cut upon end grain wood whereas wood cuts are cut with the grain. In this class we will use an inexpensive substitute for boxwood that is called Resingrave. Students will learn the basics of wood engraving, the tools, the proper way to hold and sharpen the gravers or burins as the tools are called. Students will go home with at least one print of their block. Instructor will supply at cost blocks for students to keep; tools will be lent for use during class.

$30 / $35 Materials for one print provided. Additional plates available if registered and order in by July 1.
Solar plate etching is a non-chemical etching process by which the student will produce an intaglio print. We expose a photo-emulsion coated plate to the sun with a transparency or an item like string or even a drawing on vellum on top of the plate. This exposes the light sensitive solar plate to the sun setting the image in the emulsion. We then rinse the plate in water washing away the emulsion covered by the design or string while gently scrubbing for a minute, then dry it. The plate is then inked and wiped. We will print the plate in an intaglio press on damp paper, producing a gorgeous print, suitable for framing. Students will receive one 5 x 7 plate and will have the option of purchasing an additional plate. $9 for one 5 x 7 plate; $15 for two. Students should bring a 5 x 7 film positive transparency (this is a photo printed on your home printer on a transparency) of a favorite photo, or some small, flat objects like string, leaves, lace, etc. Let the center know if you need help preparing a positive.

CLAY : THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE BOX

6 MONDAYS July 13,20,27 August 3,10,17
6 - 9 p.m.
$90 / $100 Students bring boots, shovels and pick axes to first class.
This class will focus on the origins of what we use to create our pieces: the clay itself. You will harvest your own clay near Lake Michigan and clean it by removing the grit and organic materials. The native clay has amazing properties and can be used to create coil-built, slab work, or wheel thrown pieces, and glazes. It is rich in iron, giving it a warm orange color at bisque, and can be low fired, pit fired, or high fired. This class will involve six sessions, beginning with a field trip to harvest clay. One session will be spent cleaning and preparing the clay, three sessions creating work, and a final session culminating with a pit or barrel firing. You may choose to use the clay to develop a new glaze, and we can help you do that as well. The premise of this class is to help the artist understand the material of clay and its varied uses. This will enable you to gain a true feel for the clay, and in turn, create more exciting avenues to venture down in your future work. Open studio time available. See CLAY STUDIO above.
