The motif for the course will be a giant still life platform. This structure will contain still life objects, plants, models, light sources, etc. It will feature a great deal of visual complexity, but still have enough open areas that the artist can see through it. All work produced in class will be displayed on the walls of the gallery with the still life. A reception for the artists and their work will be the culminating event for the class. Students provide their own materials. Ask the Center for the supplies list.
Grand Valley State University must receive the completed registration forms and check payments by AUGUST 6, 2010.

1.The student will learn several strategies to read and represent in two-dimensions the location of objects in a three-dimensional space.
2.The student will increase mapping skills. This is the awareness of the positions of objects in a 3-D space and specifically how to represent them with overlap and elevation on a 2-D plane.
3.The student will use negative drawing to enhance understanding of contour and to build a unified pictorial space.
4.The student will represent the illumination of forms using both tenebrism and chiaroscuro by subtractive drawing techniques.
5.The student will learn to make a drawing in which the scale and proportion are consistent.
6.The student will use analysis, comparison, and measuring strategies to create accurate scale and proportional relationships.
7.The student will create devices to visually isolate and represent a 3-D space as distinct layers on a 2-D surface.
8.The student will develop and use a variety of devices other than linear and atmospheric perspective to represent space.
9.The student will develop a list of analytical criteria to critique, and then edit the accuracy of their own drawings.

PRIVATE PRINTMAKING: LINOLEUM CUTS OR WOOD ENGRAVING
Adults & Teens (one-on-one)
Kathee Kiesselbach, BFA
Private One on One Lessons by Appointment (Call the Center)
$25 / hour. Student can purchase linoleum or block from instructor at a minimal fee.
Linoleum cuts are a classic printmaking method and are valued for their ease and beauty. They are easy to do and great for beginners. Wood engraving is more difficult, but one has to start somewhere! Wood engravings were used to illustrate books and papers before offset printing and photographic processes. Their beauty lies in their black background and white lines. Wood engraving differs from wood cuts because it is cut upon end grain wood whereas wood cuts are cut with the grain. In this class we will use an inexpensive substitute for boxwood that is called Resingrave. Students will learn the basics of wood engraving, the tools, the proper way to hold and sharpen the gravers or burins as the tools are called. Students will go home with at least one print of their block. Instructor will supply at cost blocks for students to keep; tools will be lent for use during class.

The second class will be spent cutting the block and printing the block. Students will leave with several prints of their design suitable for framing. Bookplates, or exlibris, as they are called, have been used for centuries by writers, artists, and the wealthy to mark ownership of their books. Designs used had to do with the interests of their owner. Pets were often included, or some hobby. The exlibris is glued inside the front cover of a book and usually contains the name of the owner. Batik was practiced in Africa and Asia, particularly Indonesia, Java and Bali. Examples and books will be shown to students during the first class. Day one, students will apply wax to their design on silk with an ancient tool called a tjanting. After the design is finished, the students will apply dyes from light to dark. The students will take the silk scarf home to boil out the wax. On day two students will do a show and tell with their first scarf, then proceed on to do a second scarf using the lessons learn on the first scarf. Bring gloves if you don't want dye on your hands!
INTAGLIO PRINTMAKING: SOLAR POWERED ETCHING
Adults and Teens (limit 8 students)
Kathee Kiesselbach, BFA
2 SUNDAYS July 19 and 26
Noon - 3 p.m.
$30 / $35 Materials for one print provided. Additional plates available if registered and order in by July 1.
Solar plate etching is a non-chemical etching process by which the student will produce an intaglio print. We expose a photo-emulsion coated plate to the sun with a transparency or an item like string or even a drawing on vellum on top of the plate. This exposes the light sensitive solar plate to the sun setting the image in the emulsion. We then rinse the plate in water washing away the emulsion covered by the design or string while gently scrubbing for a minute, then dry it. The plate is then inked and wiped. We will print the plate in an intaglio press on damp paper, producing a gorgeous print, suitable for framing. Students will receive one 5 x 7 plate and will have the option of purchasing an additional plate. $9 for one 5 x 7 plate; $15 for two. Students should bring a 5 x 7 film positive transparency (this is a photo printed on your home printer on a transparency) of a favorite photo, or some small, flat objects like string, leaves, lace, etc. Let the center know if you need help preparing a positive.

CLAY : THINKING OUTSIDE OF THE BOX

Jason Wesaw, Instructor
6 MONDAYS July 13,20,27 August 3,10,17
6 - 9 p.m.
$90 / $100 Students bring boots, shovels and pick axes to first class.
This class will focus on the origins of what we use to create our pieces: the clay itself. You will harvest your own clay near Lake Michigan and clean it by removing the grit and organic materials. The native clay has amazing properties and can be used to create coil-built, slab work, or wheel thrown pieces, and glazes. It is rich in iron, giving it a warm orange color at bisque, and can be low fired, pit fired, or high fired. This class will involve six sessions, beginning with a field trip to harvest clay. One session will be spent cleaning and preparing the clay, three sessions creating work, and a final session culminating with a pit or barrel firing. You may choose to use the clay to develop a new glaze, and we can help you do that as well. The premise of this class is to help the artist understand the material of clay and its varied uses. This will enable you to gain a true feel for the clay, and in turn, create more exciting avenues to venture down in your future work. Open studio time available. See CLAY STUDIO above.
