New Student Gallery
December 26, 2006, 10:52:36 by director in Newsletters.

New Student Watercolor Landscape Exhibit

From December 20, 2006 to January 31, 2007, a new student gallery at the Buchanan Art Center will feature landscape watercolor paintings from the work of a student of the art center, Thomas P. Fehlner. The Opening Reception for this exhibit will be held on Sunday, January 7, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. All are welcome.

As a youth, Fehlner had the good fortune to have excellent art teachers in grade school. However, little time was available from his career as a research professor of chemistry at the University of Notre Dame to do more than dabble. Watercolors were viewed with appreciation and no little awe. However, in the summer of 2005, his 41st year of teaching chemistry, he took his first course in watercolors at the Buchanan Art Center. His studies began with Mary Broccolo Derr, who opened his eyes to the fascination of this medium, and continued with Shirley Roti Roti, who shared her keen insight on sketching and painting. Since 2005, Fehlner has painted continuously but, with retirement, the pace has quickened. He has taken considerable pleasure in rendering the scenes encountered in some of his recent travels.

A class, "Basic Watercolors," will be offered by the Art Center on Thursdays, 6:30-8:30pm beginning January 18, 2007. Offered at low cost and taught by Fehlner, it will be a course for beginners from the perspective on one who was recently, and is perhaps still (in his own opinion), a beginner.

The Buchanan Art Center is a non-profit organization located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, MI, and houses a Main Gallery, a Student Gallery and a gift shop, and offers classes and workshops to people of all ages. For more information, contact the Center at 269-697-4005.
