Two New Gallery Exhibits at BAC in July

From July 1 through July 30, Russel T. Dailey will exhibit Surf and Turf: Seascapes and Landscapes in Watercolor, in the Show Place Gallery at the Buchanan Art Center. Concurrently, Pastels: Color and Light, artwork by Donna Chambers will be on display in the Library Gallery. The Opening Reception for these two exhibits will be held on Sunday, July 5, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Russel T. Dailey, a Canadian, moved to the U.S. at an early age and lived in various cities. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Notre Dame. Since then, he has worked as a technical illustrator for the Bendix Missile Plant in Mishawaka, as a cartographic draftsman for Clyde Williams Associates, and a technician designer for Cole Associates. He retired from M/E Design Services in South Bend in 2005. Dailey was introduced to watercolors by Zygmund Jankowski and Ed Herrmann in the early 1960s. He states, "Many of the things that we see on a daily basis provide us with the potential for a painting but we don't always recognize them as such." He hopes his paintings will provide a "meaningful experience for the viewer."

Donna Chambers has been an art lover since childhood. She has used many art mediums, including stained glass and creative writing. Currently, she is painting in pastels using such diverse subjects as landscapes, animals and portraits. Her work has been hung in juried shows at The South Bend Civic, the Box Factory for the Arts, Studio Arts, the New Galleries. Chambers' art education includes classes at Monterey Peninsula College, The Box Factory, Studio Arts, Buchanan Art Center, South Bend Museum of Art, as well as workshops with renown artists in pastels; Richard McDaniel and Allan Flattman. She is currently a student with Harry Ahn, an internationally known and honored artist in oils. Chambers is a practicing psychologist and hypnotherapist in St. Joseph Michigan. She feels that art is the "window" to the inner life of people. She has utilized art to help children and teens "verbalize" their emotions. She says, "It (art) is a non-complex way to access the emotional life, and a creative expression of deep, inner emotions. It brings satisfaction and healing to those who utilize the creativity within themselves. Whether one is an artist or an art lover, art quietly enhances our daily lives with color, perspective and joy." She will be teaching an introduction to pastels class at Buchanan Art Center this summer.

The Buchanan Art Center is a non-profit organization located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, MI. It houses three galleries and a gift shop, and offers classes and workshops to people of all ages. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00am-6:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday1:00-4:00pm. NEW EXHIBITS IN JUNE
May 21, 2009, 11:52:11 by president in Press Releases.

"WATER" BEAUTIFIES BUCHANAN ART CENTER EXHIBITS

"Oil and Water," paintings and First Day Covers by Mary Fisher, and "Lake Michigan Splendor," photography by Kristine (Wright) Sims will be featured at a reception open to the public on Sunday, June 7, from 2:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. at the Buchanan Art Center. Both exhibits run from June 2-30, and there is no charge.

Mary Fisher loves to paint in both oil and watercolor. While her subject matter often determines which medium she will use, she is comfortable with either. For the past 20 years, she has painted First Day Covers, also called Cachets. Cachets are an envelope designed around and affixed with a new issue stamp. The United States Post Office then cancels these envelopes with the official city, state and date of that new stamp. These cachets are highly collectable by stamp enthusiasts to whom she sells throughout the United States and worldwide. Fisher is president of the Cachetmakers Association, a chapter of the American First Day Cover Society. She has consistently won top awards in the Cachetmakers' Contest sponsored annually by the AFDCS. Additionally, her covers are regularly chosen and displayed in the AFDCS publication First Days. Her May 28, 2006 cachet of the 400th anniversary of the Exploration of Samuel de Champlain was featured on the cover of nationally known reference catalog Scott's First Day Cover Catalogue & Checklist. Fisher has been a resident of the Michiana area most of her life. She graduated from Riley High School in South Bend, Indiana, and subsequently received bachelor and master degrees from Indiana University, Bloomington. She has exhibited her artwork in various juried shows including the Leeper Park Art Fair. Presently her available First Day Covers are for sale on the internet at: stampwants.com/stores/fishercachets.

Kristine (Wright) Sims brings "Lake Michigan Splendor" to the Library Gallery. She graduated from Buchanan High School where she took three years of art under Marie Remington, and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design at Grand Valley State University. She is currently employed at a local graphics printing company. Her love for Southwest Michigan and Lake Michigan drew her to attempt to capture its beauty and ever changing views. She enjoys sharing her pictures with people who are not so fortunate to experience the Lake. All of her pictures have been taken in southwestern Michigan, including Saint Joseph, Grand Haven, South Haven and Holland. "It wasn't a very hard decision to decide on a subject matter or title for this show. Lake Michigan Splendor" truly fits what I have captured and what I am sharing in my photographs. No two sunsets are ever the same, no two storms ever create the same cloud formations or color reflections onto the water, and every year the sand dunes and surrounding terrain change shape."

ROTI ROTI GALLERY EXHIBIT
March 30, 2009, 09:21:52 by president in Press Releases.

INTERNATIONAL ARTIST COMES TO BUCHANAN

"Manifest Rites," a collection of lens-based art including silver gelatin prints and ink jet Piezography prints, created by Bill Davis, a Midwest native, will open on Sunday, April 19 and will run through May 31, 2009. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2009, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Bill Davis is an artist who has traveled to work or live in Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia. After a 1993 B.F.A. Davis relocated from Chicago to Prague to assist Pavel Banka and teach, exhibit, and freelance in regional venues. In 1995, he exhibited in The Ljubljana PhotoFest and received a stipend to lecture at the University of Leeds, England. From Prague he helped launch Ohio University’s Study Abroad program, assisted in Venice, and translated Photo History coursework to lecture and teach for the Umeleckeprumyslove Academy of Usti Nad Labem. Upon returning to teach in the U.S., Davis received local, regional, and international grant support to work in Korea (Rotary Travel Selection), Vermont (Cone Editions Press/WMU Technology Grant), and exhibit in Australia (Federal Government Arts Funding Body of Australia), England (University of Leeds), and Ukraine (Ohio Arts Council/CKSCP) where he presented his work to the city’s mayors, U.S. Ambassador Steven Pifer and their respective attaches.

Davis’ images are held publicly and privately in international and domestic collections. Work from his museum, university, and gallery exhibits have been promoted in Art in America (New York, U.S.), "Light and Lens" (Focal Point Press-Elsevier), "Young World Photographers" (Slovenia), Photographer’s Market (F&W Publications- U.S.), Portraits of Rite (Orange Regional Gallery –– NSW, Aus.), Points, Words, Threads (Exhibition Catalog/Nayar Gall –– Michigan, U.S.), XConnect (Kelly Writer’s House UPenn –– Philadelphia, U.S.), and The Art of Photography (Exhibition Catalog, San Diego, U.S.). As his work reflects the nature of biography, identity, and digital culture, he has presented lectures on these topics and his experience at Photography, Humanities, Film/Video, and Digital/New Media conferences and workshops in the United States and Europe- from Harvard to Charles University. Davis maintains creative activity with collectors, curators, and artists via a photo studio and 19th century farmhouse in the Midwest where he teaches on a full time appointment as an Assistant Professor of Photography and Digital Imaging at Western Michigan University’s Frostic School of Art and has additionally served as The Prague Summer Program’s Coordinator of Photography.

The range of his research and activity mirrors the extensive spectrums of format and technique for contemporary photography- as analogue nostalgia and digital venture. Bill Davis has embraced each process as both have combined to emerge as the core requirement for anyone identifying their self as "image maker". His web site link can be found at http://homepages.wmich.edu/~wdavis/.

NEW EXHIBITS IN APRIL
March 30, 2009, 09:16:19 by president in Press Releases.

TWO 'GREEN' SHOWS COMING IN APRIL

TWO "GREEN" SHOWS OPEN AT BUCHANAN ART CENTER

Mother and Me," paintings by Margaret "Lee" Green, of Niles, Michigan, and her mother, the late Blanche Horner Rowley, will open at the Buchanan Art Center's Library Gallery on April 2 and continue through April 29. In addition, from April 2 through April 27, a juried exhibit, "Trash to Treasure: Art from Recycled Materials," will be featured in the Show Place Gallery. The reception for both exhibits will be held on Sunday, April 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Margaret "Lee" Green, of Niles, Michigan, is a self taught artist who has always loved art and music. Her grandparents had a home in Provincetown, MA, and her summers were spent there, surrounded by art and the artists. Lee Green says of herself, "The arts were doled out amongst the sisters in my family, and I got Music. After attending Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and studying the violin, I married a symphony musician, had children, and was myself immersed in motherhood. I began to take art courses in the Detroit area…clay with John Glick and Sandy Lentz…drawing with Kitty Green at the BBAA (Birmingham, Bloomfield Art Association)…oils with William House …it has been an on-and-off ‘thing' all of my adult life. I took up watercolor in the 1990s, and decided I enjoyed it very much. Then I took an oil class, and decided I liked it better. In other words, I am an art schizophrenic." Green's mother, Blanche Horner Rowley, was a fine oil painter, schooled in Europe and Provincetown. She is mentioned in several publications and papers in Boston where she often showed. She, unfortunately, gave up painting when she married and had children. Very late in her seventies, she took it up again.

"Trash to Treasure: Art from Recycled Materials," is open to the public, and will contain works from both youth and adults. Awards will be presented on Sunday, April 19, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. Entries must be brought to the Center on Tuesday, March 31, between 1 and 8 p.m. All work must remain in the show until pick up on Tuesday, April 28, between 1 and 8 p.m. Students may enter one piece with no entry fee. Prize monies, donated by AEP Indiana Michigan Power, will be given to students for 1st place ($50), 2nd place ($30) and 3rd place ($20) in each category of grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Adults will be charged a $10 entry fee for up to two pieces, and Adult prize monies will be given for 1st place ($100), 2nd place ($75) and 3rd place ($50). All heavy or framed wall pieces should be ready to hang. Educational materials will be supplied by Southeast Berrien County Landfill; Berrien Regional Education Service Agency Arts in the Schools will offer a $50 scholarship to the RESA Award winner from each participating school.

The Buchanan Art Center is a nonprofit organization located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, MI.
