McCOY'S CREEK TRAIL SUBJECT OF NEW BAC EXHIBIT IN OCTOBER
The Buchanan Art Center is pleased to announce the opening of a new gallery exhibit in October. From October 5 through November 16, the Shirley and Donald Roti Roti Gallery will feature an exhibit of watercolor paintings by Dowagiac artist David Baker. Titled "Just Passing Through," the series features 13 paintings of McCoy's Creek which traverses through the city of Buchanan on its way to the St. Joseph River. The Opening Reception will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. The artwork will be for sale.
David Baker received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Western Michigan University and a Master of Fine Arts, Summa Cum Laude, from Indiana State University. He also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since 1981, he has been an art instructor at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, and has recently taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago - Ox-Bow Summer School of Art in Saugatuck, Michigan. In 2006 Baker painted a collection of watercolors which documented the entire course of the Dowagiac Creek. "For that series I had a simple concept. I went to every location where a bridge crossed the creek and made a plein air painting on location.
For ‘Just Passing Through' I was more selective. While I did not paint every possible site, I do show the diverse character of the Creek as it flows through the city. Some of the McCoy's Creek paintings reflect the industrial history of this mill town. Some show the Creek groomed as a civic resource for recreation. In other paintings it is a quiet presence passing through residential backyards. And of course, there are paintings with redbud trees in blossom," stated Baker.
Additionally, the exhibit will feature a giant map of McCoy's Creek. Gallery patrons will be able to identify the locations where the artist painted.
The Buchanan Art Center is a non-profit organization located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, MI. It houses three galleries and a gift shop, and offers classes and workshops to people of all ages. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00am-6:00pm, and Saturday 1:00-4:00pm. For more information, contact the Center at 269-697-4005 or visit the web site at www.buchananartcenter.org.

NEW AUGUST GALLERY EXHIBIT
August 09, 2008, 08:43:23 by president in Press Releases.
Susan Sutherland Barnes and John Horwitz combine talents in new exhibit
The Buchanan Art Center is pleased to open an exhibit featuring Susan M. Sutherland Barnes, ceramicist, and John Horwitz, photographer, in the Shirley and Donald Roti Roti Gallery on August 18. The opening reception will be held on August 23, 5-8pm. Art Inspired by Nature-- A Real Bowl From a Real Leaf, and, When Shadows Become Liquid – A Series Decalescense, will remain in the gallery through September 28, 2008.
Sutherland Barnes, a Niles, MI native, received a BFA from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN. She studied fibers under various professors at Notre Dame and Michigan State University, then concentrated on ceramics at Goshen College, Western Michigan University, University of Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, and Alfred University (NY). She currently serves as president of the Artists' Cooperative Gallery in Omaha, NE.
She began as a painter, then weaver, fiber artist and finally ceramicist. Now residing in Iowa, Sutherland Barnes has a pottery studio with a view into the woods. She states: "Nature is a predominant theme and I make regular trips outdoors in search of inspiration and materials for texturing my clay. I like living where I work. Life feels better to me when I can play in the clay as the day's needs fall in around." Her web site is found at www.smsbarnes.com.
John Horwitz, an Elkhart, IN resident, is past president of the Northern Indiana Artists' Association. His numerous nation-wide photography exhibits include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Guggenheim in New York, and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
Horwitz says: "I have always felt that photography has been used too often to simply document our lives and the inherent creativity of the media is overlooked or dismissed as ‘easy' when compared to more traditional art forms. It is a process whose many practitioners debate form or content yet rarely achieve technical competence or aesthetic clarity. It is my desire to find a balance between these two ideals and a deep and meaningful personal expression." His web site is at www.photo-cell.com.
The Buchanan Art Center is a non-profit organization located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, MI. It houses three galleries and a gift shop, and offers classes and workshops to people of all ages. Summer hours, through the end of August, are Monday through Friday 10:00am-6:00pm, Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm and Sunday 1:00pm-4:00pm. NEW AUGUST GALLERY EXHIBITS
August 04, 2008, 03:39:22 by president in Press Releases.
Photographs by Dick Remington, and Gardner School Exhibit Featured in August
The Buchanan Art Center is pleased to announce new exhibits in the Show Place and Library Galleries, opening August 2, 2008, with an Opening Reception scheduled for August 3, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. It’s a Small World, photographs by Dick Remington, remains in the Show Place Gallery through August 21; Gardner School: What a Good Beginning, features photographs, sketches, and watercolors from five artists. The exhibit remains in the Library Gallery through August 31.
Dick Remington was born and raised in Buchanan. He has deep roots there since his great grandfather, Elmer Remington, owned and operated a blacksmith shop in Buchanan in the 1880's. In addition, his grandfather, George “Carl” Remington and his dad, George, ran a machine shop there.
Remington, who holds an Associate’s Degree in Accounting and Business Administration, became interested in nature as a kid and wanted to take pictures of birds. He was inspired to purchase “proper equipment in order to get those kind of pictures”... by Larry West who presented a slide show at Fernwood some years ago. “Most people have never really seen insects up close and magnified to notic the beautiful textures, colors and patterns that they have,” states Remington. Two of his photographs were published in the Michigan DNR magazine for amateur photographers and he has won several awards from the Twin Cities Camera Club in St. Joseph, Michigan.
Gardner School: What a Good Beginning, features photographs by Joseph Crachiola, Cyndi Avedon, Rich Beckermeyer, watercolors completed by Thomas Fehlner during Plow Day, an annual event held at the School, and sketches by Shirley Roti Roti. Completing the exhibit is a showcase full of memorabilia from Marie Kangas, whose mother, May Rowley, taught at Gardner School. It includes handwritten letters from parents of students who attended, and a copy of Rowley’s teaching contract from 1909, along with “Rules of Conduct for Teachers.” The Gardner School building is a one-room school which was re-located to its current site on Andrews Road in Buchanan, and is part of the School Farm complex. Activities for elementary school students are held throughout the school year at the Farm.
The Buchanan Art Center is a non-profit organization located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, MI. The Buchanan Art Center is pleased to announce two exhibits opening in July, with the Opening Reception for both scheduled for July 13, from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Opening on July 10 in the Shirley and Donald Roti Roti Gallery: Larry Horrigan: Forest to Furniture. Opening July 2 in the ShowPlace and Library Galleries: Irresistible Paintable Buchanan, Oils by Dan Schwob.
Larry Horrigan is a Michigan native, born and raised in Byron Center. He started woodworking at the age of 12, and working for wages in wood at age 15. He graduated from high school in 1978 with many studies in the building trades. In 1986 he Graduated from the Great Lakes Log Home School in Minnesota. He lives in a log home which he built in the Scandinavian scribe fit log construction style.
Needing the proper wood for construction of a period blockhouse was one of the motivations for purchasing a portable sawmill. It provides the correct size and species of wood for reproduction and art work. He offers the complete package from selection of tree, cutting the lumber and hand finishing the final product. The art furniture is his own distinctive style, not just log furniture but a metamorphosis of 18th century style and construction, while allowing the individuality of each piece of wood to show through as functional art, retaining the integrity of each tree. The business offers a low impact form of harvesting, and gives individuals with small wood lots, or single trees the opportunity to use the "family tree" in a productive manner that may well turn into a family heirloom.
Larry has been a black powder (muzzle loader shooting) enthusiast and re-enactor since 1980. Earning many awards, he also is an accomplished gunsmith. He has built the following 18th century style weapons: a 1680 St. Etienne Fusil, a 1760 little Traverse Bay Fusil and is currently working on a 1760 German Jager.
He has been a bowyer since 1990 and has built 18th century style bows for Fort Michilimackinac, the Shipwreck Museum, and several other public and private collectors. Bows come with historically accurate quivers and arrows.
An accomplished canoe builder, his crew has traveled many times on the Great Lakes in his hand built, 21 foot, 18th century style voyageur express canoe. The last trip was from Frankfort to Fort Michilimackinac for a public landing and demo. He has built several cedar strip and fiberglass working canoes and one impressive dugout of elm. He and his wife, Janine, have their own non-profit Rabbit River Canoe brigade.
Horrigan's exhibit runs through August 10, 2008.
Dan Schwob, "Painter of the heartland of America," is a recognized, full-time, professional artist, specializing in original on-site oil paintings of small towns which he terms "the heartland of America." His studio is located in Mishawaka, Indiana, where he keeps a large inventory of paintings of Indiana and Michigan, including many paintings of the University of Notre Dame.
Schwob's formal training started as a student of the Midland Academy of Art and he continued studies throughout the years with various schools and fellow artists. His paintings are displayed in homes and offices from coast to coast, from Hilton Head to San Francisco. His "considerable body of work" has won many awards and has been represented by galleries in Raleigh, Chicago and San Francisco.
Schwob's style of painting can be classified as "painterly Realism." His exhibit continues through July 31, 2008.
