SCALES, GILLS AND FINS: FISH ART
A
small, competitive, adult exhibit of fish related art in BAC’s Kathryn Hess Gallery, April 11 through
May 26. Reception and awards presentation will be held Sunday, April 22, 2-4 PM. No size or weight limits,
license entry fee of $5 per fish, catch limit of two fish entries per artist. Subject matter must include fish.
All art media welcome including paintings, drawings, prints, clay, wood, metal, photographs, fibers, etc.
Please no taxidermic trophy mounts. Cash awards from local sponsors. Entries will be accepted
Monday, April 9 from 10 to 6 PM. Work must be ready to hang and may be priced for sale.

EMPTY BOWLS SOUP SUPPER
The 17th Buchanan Empty Bowls Soup Supper will be hosted at Buchanan
Middle School on Friday, April
13, 4-7 pm. We hope that you will attend and purchase a hand-made
ceramic bowl along with a simple soup supper. All profits from the supper will be donated to Redbud Area
Ministries (RAM) food pantry in Buchanan. This philanthropic project is made possible by a partnership of Buchanan
Art Center, Buchanan Elementary Schools, Buchanan Middle School, Redbud Area Ministries, and local potters, as well
as the continuing generosity of local merchants, area foundations, and our caring community.
TIE FLIES AND TRY CASTING
St. Joseph River Valley Fly Fishers and Al Whitfield, Volunteer Facilitators All ages! A great family activity. SATURDAY, MAY 12. 10 AM – 4 PM. Walk in. No registration required. Donations of $5 per person. Materials and equipment provided.
This fishing
workshop is designed for "anglers" of all ages to participate in learning or to demonstrate their skills at either
fly casting and/or spin casting activities. The rods and reels will be supplied for your safe and responsible use. Members
of the St. Joseph River Valley Fly Fishers will be on hand to offer tips and guidance to participants. They will also be available
to share their valuable wit and wisdom regarding the art, history and importance of protecting our "cold water fisheries"
in America. Hands-on instruction in the art of tying your own flies will also be provided. Doug Bucha, Ric Ladonski and Al
Whitfield will have on display their collections of flies, antique lures and fish stamps while
offering free appraisals of your collections. There will be free information on local fishing sites and
where to go for gear, tackle, licenses and bait. Ann Miller, local author of “Hatch Guide for Upper Midwest
Streams” will be on hand for a book signing.
Educational information
including Fish Facts and a Fishing ABC’s Coloring Book will be available. The littlest anglers will
enjoy fishing in a “Catch and Release Minnow Pond”. All ages are invited to try their hand
at creating beautiful Japanese Gyotaku (fish prints). While at the
Center enjoy our delightful exhibit “Scales, Gills and Fins: Fish Art”
which includes 62 works by area artists.
Bring a spouse, relative, or kid with you. It promises to be an
enjoyable day of brushing up of those casting skills in preparation for a successful fishing trip in the near future.
Any profits will be shared by the Fly Fishers and Buchanan
Art Center.

Experience the dynamic coming together
of clay, fire, smoke and water in this one-day, walk-in workshop.
During this exciting firing process you
can actually watch the glazes melt and the colors change right before your eyes! Just walk in (FOOTWEAR
IS REQUIRED), buy a piece of pre-fired handmade pottery donated by BAC potters and glaze it the day of the firing. ALL
GLAZING MUST BE DONE ONE HOUR BEFORE FIRING to allow time for drying. The entire process will take approximately
3 hours. While waiting for your pots to dry, be sure to check out other activities and shows at the Center and then spend
some time exploring all of Buchanan’s businesses, downtown and uptown, for art and music events, shopping and food during
“Unsanctioned: Music and Art.” If you wish to create your own pieces for the firing,
check out our Spring Pottery classes. Everyone is welcome to come and just watch the fun! All
profits and donations will go to the Clay Studio Fund. Don’t miss our book and video sale that day

you ever thought about taking piano lessons or having your child take lessons? Well now is your chance
to take a group class that will introduce you and/or your child to the piano and you will see that learning to play the piano
can be fun! First we will look at the inside of the grand piano at the Center and we will discover some
interesting things about how a piano makes its beautiful sound. We will also discuss the other kinds of
pianos that are made. Next we will spend some time investigating the keyboard and see what fun facts we
can find. Then, after numbering our fingers, each student will learn a short piano piece and have the opportunity
to play it on the keyboard of the grand piano!! Register today with a family member, friend or loved one.
You just might find you like the lovely music you can create.

Have you ever thought
about learning to play the violin, or having your child take violin lessons? Well now is your chance to take a group lesson
on the violin and see how fun it can be. This class will start by introducing you and/or your child to
the violin and the bow by finding out the names of their most important parts. Then we will learn about
the importance of good posture and how to stand while playing and while in the rest position. We will spend
some time learning the correct way to hold the violin bow and the different songs and games you can do while holding the bow.
This is so much fun you won’t even know you’re practicing! I will share with you the
importance of starting out with the correct size violin and bow. We will learn how to actually put the violin in playing position
and hold it there without using your hands. Playing the violin can be a very rewarding experience so come and give it a try.
No matter what your age, it’s never too late to learn!

Throughout the winter and into the spring, crows seem to be everywhere. During this three session
series, children will learn about the habits and habitat of these beautiful and interesting creatures. They will explore crow
folk tales and observe crow images in art. Additionally, they will create artworks using a variety of media and techniques,
including painting, clay sculptures, collage and puppetry.

Let’s celebrate Earth Day! Spring is a time of renewal
and what better way to welcome the season than to explore the color, beauty and texture of nests, eggs and feathers. Children

to create bird masks.

This
course is a continuing techniques course in watercolor painting, geared towards serious beginners and those intermediate painters
who want to expand or practice various tools and techniques in watercolor. Special attention will be given to how to
use reference materials and how to “save” a painting that has gone wrong. Students will work on projects of their
own choosing, with individual instruction aimed at introducing effective ways to achieve the desired effects with watercolor.
The first session will include a discussion of materials: if you have your own supplies, bring them, but
if you are purchasing supplies you might want to wait until after this first session to shop. Materials needed for the
first session will be provided for anyone who does not have their own. Written suggestions on what supplies to bring to class
are available on request.

decorating techniques, glaze application, glaze mixing, and the loading and firing of kilns. Change of shoes required. Notebook

Introductory level students will learn about the art of fusing glass, types of glass, and how
to use glass-cutting tools. They will make projects such as jewelry, magnets and other small glass pieces.
All materials and tools will be provided. Introductory students will be given first priority in firings. Students
must have taken the INTRODUCTORY level glass fusing class at BAC before they can participate at the independent Workshop
level. Independent workshop students are required to supply all of their own tools and glass. All pieces must be made in class;
only pieces made during the workshop will be fired. Some glass is available for purchase in class. See

PAINTING BIRDS IN GOUACHE

This course is for any level artist who wants to learn the techniques of using gouache to paint birds.
Gouache is an opaque watercolor that has been used by artists for centuries and is perfect for depicting fine details.
We will be practicing some blending exercises before we begin painting birds. First one up is the Black Capped Chickadee.
BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION IN GOUACHE

This is a basic course in illustrating
botanical subjects using gouache, an opaque watercolor. It is for students of all skill levels and will emphasize the importance
of observation in developing accurate paintings of specimens. This session will use all new specimens so anyone who
has taken the class before will have new experiences illustrating the plants around us.
COPPER CLAY: PMC BASICS

Experience
a new creative adventure and learn how fun and easy it is to make beautiful jewelry from Precious Metal Clay. Working with
the various metal clays is an exciting process where even the inexperienced can explore their artistic abilities and create
unique, one of a kind pieces. In this class students will learn the basic fundamentals of working with
Copper Clay which includes design, form, texturing, torch and/or kiln firing, finishing and polishing. Basic tools and textures
will be provided for use. If you have a favorite stamp or texture you would like to use, or have a design
idea, bring it with. Bring your own lunch or fast food it. Students are asked to include their e-mail address at registration
so that Vicki can contact you before the class starts.
BEGINNING CAKE DECORATING

Students
will learn the basics of decorating a buttercream covered cake, to include “frosting” it, making flowers and finishing
with borders through this hands-on class. The first night will consist of a demonstration of covering and decorating a sample
cake and ideas for their project. Students will then learn the basics of coloring and making a variety of buttercream flowers
(which they will save) and borders on their own. The second night requires the student to bring in a round,
unfrosted 9” cake to frost in class and finish it with an appropriate border. They may choose a specific
or general theme which should include flowers. The instructor will have a few tools to loan but students
are asked to bring in their own well-marked tools including an off-set spatula, rubber spatula, dish towel, apron, and on
the second night a 9” unfrosted cake and container.
PAINTING CONVINCING FLESHTONES: CLASSIC PORTRAIT PAINTING

Step-by-step introduction to oil painting realistic skin tones for both beginners and more advanced students.
Demonstrations will be based on analysis of Old and Modern Masters’ paintings, photographs and life.
Advice on selecting pigments, creating color notes, developing a strong tonal three-dimensional facial structure, painting
wrinkles and skin folds. Students should bring small and medium size filbert oil brushes, the oil pigments yellow ochre, titanium
white and venetian red and cleanup rags. The teacher will supply other pigments. The 45-minute lunch can
be brown bag or fast food.
