MUSIC HISTORY:  BAROQUE PERIOD

REGISTRATION REQUIRED TWO DAYS BEFORE THE CLASS.

Members $7 per person or $25 for a family;  Nonmembers $8 per person or $28 for a family.

This is the first of four periods of music into which we are going to look this winter and spring for the purpose of discovering some real interesting facts about the performance styles that are unique to each period!!  This class will look into the Baroque period of music and it will be presented as an educational recital.  An overview of the Baroque period will be given and then three short selections from that period of music will be played on the grand piano.  Information about the pieces and their composers will be shared with you between each selection.  This would be a wonderful activity for friends and family to enjoy together.


THE FIRST PIANO LESSON

Have you ever thought about taking piano lessons or having your child take lessons?  Well now is your chance to take a group class that will introduce you and/or your child to the piano and you will see that learning to play the piano can be fun!  First we will look at the inside of the grand piano at the Center and we will discover some interesting things about how a piano makes its beautiful sound.  We will also discuss the other kinds of pianos that are made.  Next we will spend some time investigating the keyboard and see what fun facts we can find.  Then, after numbering our fingers, each student will learn a short piano piece and have the opportunity to play it on the keyboard of the grand piano!!  Register today with a family member, friend or loved one.  You just might find you like the lovely music you can create.

Note: The grand piano at the Buchanan Art Center, once owned by Ida Kathryn Fagras who taught piano and voice privately and in Buchanan Public Schools, is on generous extended loan by the teacher she left it to, Southwestern Michigan College vocal music instructor David Carew.  Thank you, Mr. Carew!


VALENTINES WORKSHOP FOR OUR U.S. TROOPS

FREE.  All materials provided by the White family and BAC

In memory of Mary Ruth White, who originally started the project, we will be creating valentines for our service men and women.  We will be using many of the materials that she and her family donated to the Center while learning a variety of creative techniques.  Participants are encouraged to bring in specific names and addresses if they like.  The Center will mail all the Valentines after the second class.  This workshop is a  great family activity including kids, moms, dads, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

Have you ever thought about learning to play the violin, or having your child take violin lessons? Well now is your chance to take a group lesson on the violin and see how fun it can be.  This class will start by introducing you and/or your child to the violin and the bow by finding out the names of their most important parts.  Then we will learn about the importance of good posture and how to stand while playing and in the rest position.  We will spend some time learning the correct way to hold the violin bow and the different songs and games you can do while holding the bow.  This is so much fun you won’t even know you’re practicing!  I will share with you the importance of starting out with the correct size violin and bow. We will learn how to actually put the violin in playing position and hold it there without using your hands.  Playing the violin can be a very rewarding experience so come and give it a try.  No matter what your age, it’s never too late to learn!

CHOCOLATE DAY AT THE BAC

All ages Welcome!  A great family activity.
SATURDAY, FEB 11, 10 AM - 4 PM
NO ADMISSION FEE.

Individual activities may require a small fee and many items will be for sale.
More details will be available later. More chocolate surprises in store!

Chocolate lovers will not want to miss this special day at the Buchanan Art Center.  The focus of the day will be on everything chocolate!  Learn the history of chocolate and sample a drink from one of the original recipes.  Discover more delectable recipes in our BAC Chocolate Creations Cookbook.  Come closest to guessing how many chocolate kisses in a glass jar and win them!  Many edible items will be offered for sale from our juried Chocolate Bake Off contest.  Make a Chocolate Valentine.  Take a Mid-winter Dip in our Chocolate Fountain.

We will also be wrapping up our 2012 Valentine Fund Raising Event.  Valentine's Day Gift Baskets will be on display for a Silent Auction which begins February 4. These baskets will be full of goodies, including chocolate donated by local businesses.  The winners will be announced at 4 PM so the baskets may be taken home as gifts for Valentine's Day.
 

A professional cake decorator will be demonstrating Creative Chocolate Cupcake Decorating.  If we get enough snow we will have a Snowman Building Contest with prizes.  A limited number of reasonably priced Snowman Building Permits and Plots will be on sale that day so make plans with your family to come early.  Hot chocolate will be available to take the chill off so don't let the cold keep you away.  Coupons from local businesses will be available so when you leave the Center you can enjoy a meal and more of nature's greatest treat, CHOCOLATE!

rop into our clay studio, meet our clay teaching staff, try your hand at clay, help feed the hungry in the Buchanan area and maybe even sign up for a clay class, all at the same time.  Create a clay bowl with the assistance of our experienced instructors and return to glaze it.  After it is fired it will be donated to the annual Buchanan Empty Bowls Soup Supper to be held at Buchanan Middle School on Friday, April 13,
4:00 - 8:30 pm.  We hope that you will attend and purchase a bowl along with a simple soup supper.  You may pre-purchase YOUR bowl the day that you glaze it and pick it up at the supper.  All profits from the supper will be donated to the local food pantry of Redbud Area Ministries (RAM) in Buchanan.

Note:  This philanthropic project is made possible by a partnership of Buchanan Art Center with Buchanan Public Schools, Redbud Area Ministries, local potters and the overwhelming generosity of local merchants, professionals, organizations, churches and our caring community.  We are especially grateful to Rovin Ceramics for some free clay to the schools and  Express 1 for free delivery of that and more clay.

ART IN THE KITCHEN

Make your own art materials!  Students will discover their inner scientist as they mix, stir and measure their own art concoctions, making ivory soap sculptures, salt dough magnets, bread dough sculptures and more! Join Ms. Candie in the kitchen.


CLAYMATES

This class will introduce young people to the basics of working with clay.  We will pinch, coil and slab to handbuild projects that encourage creativity.  Students will get a chance to try the potter’s wheel and learn how to decorate and glaze their pottery.   Experienced students can pursue their own projects under the guidance of the instructor.


PET PORTRAITS WORKSHOP

Have you ever wanted to draw your pet?  Bring a favorite picture and after practicing with a variety of materials including pen/ink and pencil/colored pencil, we will choose a medium and create a portrait.


VOCAL MUSIC FOR CHILDREN

This class is for those kids who love to sing and sing and sing some more!  It is also for those children who are more reserved in their singing, but you just know they’ve got it in them!! Unlocking Your Child’s Musical Potential is the goal as we learn songs that will teach us about “louds” and “softs,” and about making tones separated or smooth.  Several different kinds of notes of different lengths will be identified so we can experiment with some simple rhythms.  Be assured, we will learn songs; lots of songs!  On our last day of this class, Monday, Feb. 13 at 9 AM, the children will be given the opportunity to perform their songs for a small audience of family and friends.  Consider giving a child you love the “Gift of Music” as it is one of the best gifts you can give.

FUSED GLASS:  INTRODUCTORY OR WORKSHOP

INTRODUCTORY  $30 member,  $35 nonmember per class.  Materials & tools provided.

WORKSHOP $10 member, $12 nonmember per class.  Student provides tools & materials.

Introductory level students will learn about the art of fusing glass, types of glass, and how to use glass-cutting tools.  They will make projects such as jewelry, magnets and other small glass pieces. All materials and tools will be provided. Introductory students will be given first priority in firings.  Students must have taken the INTRODUCTORY level glass fusing class at BAC before they can participate at the independent Workshop level. Independent workshop students are required to supply all of their own tools and glass. All pieces must be made in class;  only pieces made during the workshop will be fired. Some glass is available for purchase in class.  See instructors for prices.


MONDAY AFTERNOON POTTERY

This class is designed for hand building and wheel students of all levels of experience. Learn imaginative hand building techniques and how to throw on the potter’s wheel or challenge your existing skills and consider how to combine the two approaches to clay.  We will explore the unique properties of clay, the aesthetics of form, decorating techniques, glaze application, glaze mixing, and the loading and firing of kilns. No outside clay, please. Change of shoes required. Notebook provided.  Supervised extra studio time available.


MONDAY EVENING ADVANCED POTTERY

This class is for advanced clay students who wish to work on their own projects with minimal instruction.  The instructor will model some advanced techniques.  Students will critique work to improve skills.  Permission of Education Director and instructor needed to enroll.  Supervised extra studio time available.


WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUES

This course is a continuing techniques course in watercolor painting, geared towards serious beginners and those intermediate painters who want to expand or practice various tools and techniques in watercolor.  Classes will focus on individual projects of the students’ choosing, with expanded one-on-one instruction on techniques specific to those projects, interspersed with demonstrations to the whole class.  The first session will include a discussion of materials: if you have your own supplies, bring them, but if you are purchasing supplies you might want to wait until after this first session to shop.  Materials needed for the first session will be provided for anyone who does not have their own.


METALSMITHING FOR BEADERS

$40 member  $45 nonmember.  Tools and some metal provided.

Learn how to form and cut sheet and wire copper, brass or silver to make elements to enhance your beadwork.  Make your own jump-rings, decorative elements, toggles and other clasps.  A supply of copper and some brass will be available at no cost for practice materials to complete a project.  Silver will be available from the instructor for purchase at modest cost.

WOODCARVING

John Van Dyke, Instructor

REGISTRATION REQUIRED BY SATURDAY, JAN 7.

$80 member, $89 nonmember.    All beginning materials (wood, chisels, sandpaper, etc.) and tools will be provided by the instructor.  Additional wood may be purchased individually.

Experience the joy of creating your own woodcarvings in the company of other like-minded artists.  Beginning and experienced carvers will enjoy working and learning in this friendly and challenging environment.  All beginning tools and materials will be provided.  Students may purchase their own supplies and tools locally after some experience.  Low and high relief, incised and in-the-round carving will be covered as well as different woods, tool selection and sharpening.  Safe techniques are stressed.


INTERACTION OF COLOR

Slides taken from Josef Albers hand printed book “Interaction of Color” will amaze you.  From the book’s Introduction: “In visual perception a color is almost never seen as it really is..as it physically is.  This fact makes color the most relative medium in art.  In order to use color effectively it is necessary to recognize that color deceives continually.” Join us while we share in Albers’ mind-boggling revelations about color and the reason for his interest in painting squares.  A “must” experience for anyone who works with color.


CHARMS AND TALISMANS: JEWELRY

$50 member  $55 nonmember.   Tools and some basic materials provided.

Start collecting objects now to turn into jewelry that makes a personal statement.  The student will learn basic cold-joining methods to recycle your old jewelry pieces and found objects into charm jewelry.  Stamping, forging, etching and casting are some of the techniques to be sampled.  Copper, brass and pewter will be the basic metals used. Students may choose to purchase silver or gold if they wish.


COPPER CLAY: PMC BASICS

SATURDAY MAR 10, 9AM - 4PM.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED BY MAR 7.

$75 member   $83 nonmember each class.  All materials provided.

Experience a new creative adventure and learn how fun and easy it is to make beautiful jewelry from Precious Metal Clay.  Working with the various metal clays is an exciting process where even the inexperienced can explore their artistic abilities and create unique, one of a kind pieces.  In this class students will learn the basic fundamentals of working with Copper Clay which includes design, form, texturing, torch and/or kiln firing, finishing and polishing.  Basic tools and textures will be provided for use.  If you have a favorite stamp or texture you would like to use, or have a design idea, bring it with.  Bring your own lunch or fast food it.  Students are asked to include their e-mail address at registration so that Vicki can contact you before the class starts.


THURSDAY MORNING DRAWING GROUP
with Shirley Roti Roti & Friends

"Drawing from the Model" is usually Wednesday nights, but has been put off until March because of winter weather. If you enjoy drawing and are looking for something fun to do instead or a new way to meet and learn from other creative people, this is it!

The format is informal - no instructor, no model.   The emphasis will be on sharing ideas with other people who love to draw while working on your own projects.  This is an opportunity to hang out with art friends and soak up the creative energy! 

There is no fee and no registration requirement.  You may drop in to draw when it fits your Thursday morning schedule.  Bring your own art supplies.  Meets Thursdays, January 12, 19, 26, February 2, 9,16, 23, March 1 and 8.  10 AM to Noon.  FREE
