ART CLASSES – SCHEDULE FOR SUMMER 2010

ALL AGES  WALK THROUGH RAKU at the Buchanan Art Center Facilitated by the Raku Crew (Buchanan Art Center Volunteers) All ages (Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.) SATURDAY May 29  10 am –– 8 pm Pre-made pieces available for firing as priced $10 - $25. Price includes glaze and cost of firing.  Experience the dynamic coming together of clay, fire, smoke and water in this one day, walk in workshop. In this exciting firing process you can actually watch the glazes melt and the colors change right before your eyes! Just walk in (FOOTWEAR IS REQUIRED), buy a piece of pre-fired handmade pottery donated by BAC potters and glaze it the day of the firing. ALL GLAZING MUST BE DONE ONE HOUR BEFORE FIRING to allow time for drying. While waiting for your pots to dry, be sure to spend some time exploring the artists’’ booths downtown and all of Buchanan’’s businesses, downtown and uptown, for events, shopping and food. BAC potters will be throwing on the potter’’s wheel and have beautiful pottery for sale inside the Center and outside in back of the building. All profits and donations from the clay projects will go to the Clay Studio Fund. Don’’t miss the book and video sale on the Center’’s front lawn to benefit our general fund. Join in our reception with the downtown merchants from 6PM to 10PM... all on SATURDAY, MAY 29!

PRIVATE ART TUTORING Carmen Thompson, Registered Art Therapist Ages K - 12 Time to be arranged by appointment: weekdays 1 –– 6 pm and Saturdays 9 am –– 2 pm. $25 / hour  Carmen is available for one-on-one sessions for grades K-12, using drawing and painting materials. Sessions will be focused on individual needs. Perhaps a child simply likes to draw and paint and wants to learn more, or perhaps the child has difficulty expressing himself/herself in class and the parent or teacher feels art would help with self expression and increase self esteem. Interested parents should leave their contact information with the Art Center and Carmen will contact them.  

LEARNING TO SEE AND DRAW OUTSIDE Patty Rose, Instructor 8 –– 12 years old (limit 10 students) 5 MONDAYS June 14, 21, 28, July 12, 19  10 am–– noon $40 member $45 nonmember. All materials provided.  Let’’s take it outside. Some people think that the sequel is never as good as the original and it’’s true that the art work produced by the students in Learning to See and Draw will be hard to beat. This time we’’re leaving the studio behind and taking our sketch pads and colored pencils into the great outdoors of Buchanan in a little red wagon. Landscapes, buildings, ducks, bugs and flowers, we’’ll draw it all. Parents must sign a release form to permit the students to leave the center on foot with the teacher. Parents please consider sending bottled water and sun protection for your child.  

RAKU FIRE DRAGONS #I Mornings Debbie Carew and Marie Remington, Instructors 7-12 years old (limit 10 students) 2 TUESDAYS June 15 and 29, 10 am –– noon  SATURDAY July 10, 8 am –– noon (firing date) ADULT REQUIRED $35 member $38 nonmember. All materials provided.  On the first day students will study the history of dragons and their meaning in different cultures, then sculpt their own original version in clay. The second day they will apply glazes to their dragons and prepare for the firing day. On the firing day they will watch their dragons go into the flames in the kiln and magically emerge minutes later in beautiful new colors and breathing smoke. Parents are required to accompany their child to supervise on the firing day and are encouraged to purchase a pre-made piece to glaze and fire. Bring your camera and a folding chair the day of the firing.

CREATING ART WITH THE MASTERS #1 in June Courtney Dwyer, Instructor 5 –– 7 years old (limit 10 students) 5 DAYS MON-FRI June 21 –– 25  1 –– 2 pm $20 member $23 nonmember. All materials provided.  Students will learn about different famous artists such as Faith Ringgold, Paul Gauguin, George Rodrique, Vincent VanGogh and Marcel Duchamp. Students will be introduced to these artists’’ works and will create their own original artwork using the techniques of the Masters. Art visuals as well as children’’s books will be used to enhance the lessons. REPEATS IN JULY. 

CREATING ART WITH THE MASTERS #2 in June Courtney Dwyer, Instructor 8 - 12 years old (limit 10 students) 5 DAYS MON-FRI June 21 –– 25 2:30 –– 3:30 pm $20 member $23 nonmember. All materials provided.  Students will learn about different famous artists such as Gustav Klimt, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Jackson Polluck. Students will be introduced to these artists’’ works and will create their own original artwork using the techniques of the Masters. A variety of different media will be used for each project. REPEATS IN JULY.  

SCRIBBLE WORMS Wendy Hesser, Instructor Ages 3 –– 4 years old WITH REQUIRED ADULT and 5 –– 7 years old (limit 12 students) 6 WEDNESDAYS June 23,30, July 7,14,21,28 10 –– 11 am must fill first: OVERFLOW CLASS 11:30-12:30 pm $27 member, $30 nonmember. All materials provided.  Paint, splash, squish and scribble! Open-ended art activities will encourage the young artist to explore a variety of media. They will complete 5-6 art activities per class. Dress for a mess! An adult must attend with children 3-4 years old.  

CLAYMATES Cathy Tapia, Instructor 7 –– 13 years old (limit 10 students) 6 WEDNESDAYS June 23,30, July 7,14,21,28 10 –– 11:30 am $42 member $45 nonmember. All materials provided.  This class will introduce young people to the basics of working with clay. We will pinch, coil and slab to handbuild projects that encourage creativity. Students will get a chance to try the potter’’s wheel and learn how to decorate and glaze their pottery. Experienced students can pursue their own projects under the guidance of the instructor.   

ADVANCED CLAYMATES Cathy Tapia, Instructor 7 –– 13 years old (limit 6 students) 6 WEDNESDAYS June 23,30, July 7,14,21,28 2 –– 3:30 pm $42 member $45 nonmember. All materials provided.  This class will focus on improving wheel throwing skills of advanced students that have taken at least three Claymates classes or with approval of the instructor.   

KIDS’ MOSAIC TRIVET Tammy Stepien, Instructor 3-4 years old (with a parent) and 5-12 years old (Max. 10 students, min. 4) SUNDAY June 27 2 –– 3 pm $10 member, $12 nonmember. All materials provided.  This is a fun, safe project for kids who have never done mosaic or who already enjoy creating mosaic, but without the mess. Kids will learn mosaic techniques including safely smashing tiles using a hammer while wearing protective eyewear. Students will use a push technique using ““safe”” glass pieces and small stones to create an 8X8 mosaic trivet. Makes a great gift too!  

BIG, BAD BUGS Nani Murphy, Instructor 5 –– 12 years old (limit 10) 3 DAYS July 6, 8 and 910 am –– 12:00 pm $24 member $27 nonmember. All materials provided.  We’’ll use paint and paper to make GI-NORMOUS BUGS with wings and stripes and spots and lots of crawly legs.  

SELF PORTRAITS: ME, MYSELF AND I Carmen Thompson, Instructor 8 –– 12 years old (limit 10 students) 4 DAYS, TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS July 6,8,13,15 1:30 –– 3 pm $24 member $27 nonmember. All materials provided. Bring a photo of you.   We will focus on the self portrait, giving opportunity to explore outer self, inner self and self among others. Please bring a photograph of you! If desired, the portraits can be entered in the themed, juried BAC show, Me, Myself and I, in November. Beginners are welcome.  

CRAFTS AT THE COMMON (STOP, LUNCH AND LISTEN) Buchanan Art Center and Community Volunteers: Deanna Swem, Coordinator Pre-School thru Elementary Age Children  THURSDAY July 8  12 - 1 p.m. Free Meets Downtown at the Buchanan Common  Come spend a fun filled hour creating a variety of ““make and take”” crafts at multiple tables with volunteer teachers.

FLYING FISH AND MAGIC LANTERNS Nani Murphy, Instructor 5 –– 12 years old (limit 10) 3 DAYS July 26, 27, 29 10 am –– noon $26 member $29 nonmember. All materials provided. Join Nani for three fun filled days of painting printing and paper construction. Create a fish windsock with shimmering scales and flowing tails. Construct whimsical paper lanterns to light up those warm summer nights. This is a fun class for young artists who love to paint and collage. First we’’ll design templates for our paper fish and lanterns, Then we’’ll paint and decorate them with a variety of embellishments. Finally we’’ll assemble the fish and lanterns so they are ready for flying on a stick or hanging from a tree.  

BATIK FABRIC PAINTING Nani Murphy, Instructor 5 –– 12 years old (limit 10) 3 DAYS July 26, 27, 29 1 –– 2:30 pm $20 member $23 nonmember. All materials provided.  Students will use flour and water paste to create ““batik”” designs on pieces of muslin. This is a ““kid safe”” alternative to traditional batik which uses melted wax. After the paste dries the squares are painted with diluted acrylic paint and allowed to dry. The final step is to remove the paste, wash and iron the fabric. It’’s a fun and colorful process.  

ME AND THE MASTERS #1 in August Candie Waterloo, Instructor 6 –– 8 years old (limit 10 students) 5 DAYS MON –– FRI August 2 –– 6 10 –– 11:30 am $30 member $34 nonmember. All materials provided.  You will be introduced to a different famous artist and art style each day after which you will create an original work of your own in that style. Drawing, painting, sculpture and more await you while you meet the masters. If you create a self portrait, it can be entered in the Center’’s juried member show Me, Myself and I in November.   

ART IN THE KITCHEN Candie Waterloo, Instructor 6 –– 8 years old (limit 10 students) 5 DAYS MON –– FRI August 9 –– 13 10 –– 11:30 am $30 member $34 nonmember. All materials provided.  Don’’t go out and buy art materials; make them! In this class the children will discover their inner scientist as they mix, stir and measure their own art concoctions. Join Ms. Candie in the kitchen as we make our own paints, sculpting materials and more!  

ART AROUND THE WORLD IN FIVE DAYS Candie Waterloo, Instructor 6 –– 8 years old (limit 10 students) 5 DAYS MON –– FRI August 9 –– 13 10 am - Noon $40 member $45 nonmember. All materials provided.  Are you interested in exploring the world? Enjoy a week of adventure through the lens of many cultures and artists. Make African adinkra cloths, molas from Panama and much more! Students will learn new skills through a variety of media including printmaking, papier mache and fibers. Come ready to have fun as you make art from around the world.

CLAY TILE MAKING Kathy Reddy White, BFA, MFA, Instructor Adults and Teens (limit 8 students) 4 TUESDAYS June 1,15, 22, 29 1 –– 4 pm $55 member $60 nonmember. All materials provided.  Create tiles using different techniques: Bas-relief, stamps, found objects, carving. Learn the use of the slab roller and handling of the clay to prevent stretching and warping, different methods for cutting tiles to size and how to dry tiles to prevent warping. Create a plaster mold for making multiple copies of tile. Use commercial tiles to work with your hand––made decorative tiles. Cut tiles with a tile saw and explore glazing. Advanced students will learn new techniques.  

WORKING FROM THE MODELFacilitators: Sue Coultas, Clare Hoinville, Patty Rose and Shirley Roti Roti Adults and Teens 13 WEDNESDAYS June 2,9,16,23,30, July 7,14,21,28, August 4,11,18,25 6:30 –– 8:30 pm $5 for each evening (pay as you go) Bring your own materials, drawing board and easel if portable.  Clothed models of all ages, both male and female, will be provided for quick studies and prolonged poses in any 2D or 3D medium. Open to anyone who is serious about improving their observation and technical skills. Spend a quiet evening working with others who share your interest in art in a friendly, nonjudgmental atmosphere. Participants are encouraged to help plan each session.   

MONDAY EVENING POTTERY Jon Niedzwiecki, BFA in Ceramics, Instructor Adults and Teens (limit 8 students) 8 MONDAYS June 7, 14, 21, 28, July 12, 19, 26, August 2 6:30 –– 9:30 pm $110 member, $122 nonmember. 25# of clay included; additional clay may be purchased for $19/25# which includes the cost of glazes and firing. Set of tools available in class for $16.90 (includes tax).  This class is designed for handbuilding and wheel students of all levels of experience. Learn imaginative handbuilding techniques and how to throw on the potter’’s wheel or challenge your existing skills and consider how to combine the two approaches to clay. We will explore the unique properties of clay, the aesthetics of form, decorating techniques, glaze application, glaze chemistry, and the loading and firing of kilns. No outside clay, please. Change of shoes required. Notebook provided. 

SUPERVISED EXTRA STUDIO TIME: The clay studio will be open and supervised so that any student enrolled in a clay class can put in extra time as long as that class is in session. INDEPENDENT STUDIO: Experienced students who wish to use the clay studio unsupervised must apply with the Director of Education for approval. Past enrollment in a minimum of two weekly clay classes at the Buchanan Art Center AND demonstration of a satisfactory level of proficiency and personal responsibility in the studio are required. The student will need to be signed up for a clay class that meets weekly during the session they plan to work. They will be considered a welcome member of that class and may work any other time during that session when the Center is open and there is not another class meeting in the clay studio.

FUSED GLASS: INTRODUCTORY OR WORKSHOP Susan Griffin and Marie Hodge, Instructors Adults and Teens (Intro. max. 8 students, min. 1; Workshop no limit) TUESDAYS: June 15, July 6 or Aug. 17: 6:30-8:30 pm FRIDAYS: June 11, 25, July 16, 30, Aug. 13 or 27: 10 am-Noon SATURDAYS: June 26, July 31 or Aug. 28: Noon-2 pm INTRODUCTORY $30 member, $35 nonmember / class. Student provides tools & materials.  INTRODUCTORY level students will learn about the art of fusing glass, types of glass, and how to use glass cutting tools. They will make projects such as jewelry, magnets and other small glass pieces. All materials and tools will be provided. Introductory students will be given first priority in firings. Students must have taken the INTRODUCTORY level glass fusing class at BAC before they can participate at the independent WORKSHOP level. Independent workshop students are required to supply all of their own tools and glass. All pieces must be made in class; only pieces made during the workshop will be fired. Some glass is available for purchase in class. See instructors for prices.  

DESIGN YOUR OWN BEADS Sherrie Styx, Instructor Adults and Teens 11 years old and older (max. 8 students, min. 3) SATURDAY June 12 (Register by June 10) 1 –– 4 pm $36 member $40 nonmember. All materials provided.  Now you can create beads to match whatever you wear! In this class, students will learn how to melt glass and create their own lampworked beads using glass from Italy! With plenty of hands on and individual attention you will create lots of beads to take home and make into fun jewelry. We will use frits, stringers and dichroic glass with great texture ideas. Please bring safety glasses or lightly tinted sunglasses. Please no sandals.  

DRAWING THE HUMAN HAND: ANATOMY AND STRUCTURE David Ladouceur, Ph.D, Instructor Adults and Teens (minimum 3 students)  SATURDAY June 19 12 –– 3:30 pm $50 member, $55 nonmember. Students should bring a drawing pad. Drawing materials, drawing boards, rulers and some easels provided by the Center. Canson paper available for sale in class.  In a portrait, hands are as much a key to the personality of the sitter as the face. This workshop, designed for beginners as well as advanced artists, will present a step-by-step approach to drawing expressive hands. It will begin with an introduction to their anatomy and structure and then turn to practical exercises: gestural-action drawings, using simple geometric forms to simplify their complexity and drawing first from plaster and wooden models and then from students’’ own hands. We will study Old Master drawings and learn to draw in the Renaissance style on toned paper. Bring an easel if you have one.  

MATTING, MOUNTING AND FRAMING Ashley Hanson, Instructor Adults and Teens (limit 8 students) 3 TUESDAYS June 22, 29, July 66:30 –– 8:30 pm $21 member $24 nonmember. Students will provide the materials as needed. Limited materials will be available at the Center for purchase by cash or check.  Learn to measure and cut a mat, dry mount and build attractive frames from common, inexpensive materials. High school and college students can learn to properly prepare their art work for portfolios, exhibits, competitions and fairs. Adults can prepare art work for exhibits, their homes and as gifts. Be sure to bring art work that needs attention to the first class. Watch for used frames in attics, auctions and yard sales and bring those in too. This class provides students with training required for Art Center members to use the center’’s equipment on their own.  

RIVER BRACELETS Sherrie Styx MA, Instructor Adults and Teens 11 years old and older (max. 12 students, min. 3) MONDAY July 19 (Register by July 16) 11 am –– 1 pm $18 member $20 nonmember. All materials provided.  Take a short break from life and join us to create a summer bracelet with the colors of the river. Using glass beads in blues, greens and other exciting colors you will make a wonderful summer treasure to wear and take home the same day. These bracelets fit everyone and are very durable. Bring a beach towel to sit outside, weather permitting, and a lunch or snack to enjoy on a lazy summer day.  

BEGINNING WATERCOLOR Mary Broccolo-Derr, Candidate for MFA in Painting, Instructor Adults and Teens  5 DAYS July 19 –– 23 10 –– 11:30 am $32 member $35 nonmember. Student provides all materials. Ask center for supply list.  This class will cover the basic concepts of painting with transparent paint. Washes, layers, lifting, the qualities of watercolor paints and color basics are some of the concepts covered. Get your feet wet with this exciting medium. Several step by step paintings will be produced using the techniques learned.  

THE DRAWING WORKOUT: EXERCISES TO BUILD YOUR SKILLS David Baker, MFA, Instructor Adults (minimum of 6 students required to avoid cancellation on July 24) 5 DAYS August 2 –– 6, 9 am––4 pm BAC REGISTRATION REQUIRED BY JULY 24! Reception Sunday, August 8, 2––4 pm$200 member $222 nonmember. Student provides own materials. Ask Center for supplies list. ATTENTION ALL ART TEACHERS! GRADUATE CREDIT FROM GVSU AND SB-CEU CREDITS AVAILABLE AT ADDITIONAL COST.  Grand Valley must receive the completed registration forms and check payments by AUGUST 6, 2010. Contact the Buchanan Art Center for details if interested in credit.   This course uses a series of focused strategies to help the student to expand his/her perception and to increase accuracy in representational drawing. The motif for the course will be a giant still life platform. This structure will contain still life objects, plants, models, light sources, etc. It will feature a great deal of visual complexity, but still have enough open areas that the artist can see through it. All work produced in class will be displayed on the walls of the gallery with the still life. A reception for the artists and their work will be the culminating event for the class. LANDSCAPES IN SOFT PASTELS Cathy Mc Cormick, Instructor, Founder of Northern Indiana Pastel Society Adults and Teens (limit 12 students) SATURDAY August 7 9:30 am –– 4 pm $28 member $32 nonmember. Some materials provided. Ask Cathy or center about supply list.  Want to have more fun with your art? Our class will focus on ways to make pastels do what you want them to, and having fun as well. We will use dry pastels, vine charcoal and Canson Mi-tientes paper. Please bring your own pastels if you have some, but small sets will be available if you are new to pastels. BUCHANAN CITYSCAPES IN WATERCOLOR Mary Broccolo-Derr, Candidate for MFA in Painting, Instructor Adults and Teens (limit 12 students) 5 DAYS August 9 - 13 10 –– 11:30 am $32 member $35 nonmember. Ask center for supply list.   Small scale studies in watercolor will be created using the town of Buchanan as our inspiration.  Composition, color theory and advanced watercolor techniques will be the focus of this class which will take place at various downtown sites. 

FLORAL IMPRESSIONISTIC PAINTING IN OIL Mary Broccolo-Derr, Candidate for MFA in Painting, Instructor Adults and Teens (limit 12 students) 5 DAYS August 9 - 13 1 –– 4 pm $60 member $67 nonmember. Student provides all materials. Ask center for supply list.   Impressionism and the Fauves will be our inspiration. Students will use flowers as a subject for the study of color and a more personal painterly technique of working in oil painting. Beginners welcome.  

LEARN TO PLAY THE DIDGERIDOO Sara Johnson, Instructor Adults and Teens (limit 20 students) SATURDAY August 14 4 –– 6 pm $10 member with didge; $12 nonmember with didge. $20 member without didge; $24 nonmember without didge. (Sara will loan one) Family discount: first person full price, additional family members half price. A variety of didges will be available for purchase ($50 - $90) before class if ordered early.  Sara will teach the fundamentals of playing the didgeridoo including: how to get a drone, how to alter the drone (pitch), simple rhythmic patterns, jaw drops, cheek slaps and using vocals to sing and to mimic animal sounds. She will introduce you to the art of circular breathing and provide simple exercises for strengthening the cheek muscles. She will have a didge meditation and sound bath opening,and will help with any specific attention requested. Sara will gladly stick around for informal jamming after class at a potluck and bonfire being planned for that evening off site.  

ADVANCED CLAY WORK: HARMONY AND FUNCTION AND THE WHEEL Jon Niedzwiecki, BFA in Ceramics, Instructor Adults and Teens (limit 8 students) 2 SATURDAYS August 21, 28 10 am –– 4 pm $68 member $76 nonmember. Bring tools if you have any. 25# clay provided. Additional clay $19 per 25#.  This two day workshop is a discipline based approach to working in clay on the potter’’s wheel and the creation of humanly comfortable and aesthetically pleasing functional objects. Don’’t let it scare you. Expect to have fun and develop a level of comradeship and friendly competition with your classmates. Learn traditional and new (to you) techniques of working on the potter’’s wheel and assembling multiple parts. This class will concentrate on intense personal and group coaching on skill and technique. Learn to share your skills. Be prepared to throw lots of pots into the slip bucket in the quest for your personal best. Expect to have a lot of finished pieces at the end of the course showing a new level of skill and professionalism that you can be proud to gift away or sell. INTRODUCTION TO JEWELRY SOLDERING Sherrie Styx MA, Instructor Adults and Teens 11 years old and older (max. 8 students, min. 3) WEDNESDAY August 25 5:30-7:30 pm  $18 member $20 nonmember. All materials provided.  Soldering opens the door for jewelry and stained glass work! Using copper, you will create jump rings, earrings and a wearable copper pin with fused glass. We will use soldering irons and lead free solder to create wonderful treasures to take home!   REGISTRATION INFORMATION: PLEASE REGISTER EARLY!  FULL PAYMENT is required at the time of registration to hold your place in the class and count toward the minimum number of students required to support the class. TEACHERS CANNOT ACCEPT WALK-IN STUDENTS.  Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment two week days before the first meeting or after any stated enrollment cutoff date will be canceled, in which case, the Center will notify anyone enrolled and return registration payment. Once canceled, a class will not be reopened out of consideration for the instructor’’s preparation time as well as the students’’ plans. Later registrations will be accepted ONLY if the class has not already been canceled or filled and if the instructor has enough time to plan for additional supplies and work stations.  Materials lists for classes which require that students provide their own supplies should be obtained upon registration, but may be previewed on request. Members will receive a 10% discount on class tuition only. Materials fees cannot be discounted due to the high cost of art supplies. Nonmembers may join prior to or upon registration. Please use the separate membership form. There will be no refunds after the first meeting of the class and no makeup classes except in the case of class cancellation due to weather or illness of the instructor. The Center will be closed if Buchanan Community Schools close. Otherwise, the Center will notify you. In either case, makeup classes will be scheduled.
